One of the most useful garments you can have in the hills is a windproof top, because wind makes you feel cold rapidly. Waterproofs are totally windproof but they are not very breathable. The Patagonia Ready Mix provides a high level of wind resistance coupled with extremely high levels of breathability, and cetainly more breathability than most of the other garments reviewed, including the second placed Mountain Equipment.

The Patagonia is also one of the lightest jackets tested at 400g, so you won`t mind carrying it in your rucksack when you have to wear a waterproof instead, as you will have to with all soft shells. The jacket is quite stretchy and will keep light rain off.

Put it on and you have a typically short style, like most other jackets reviewed. The fit is close but not restrictive, and the sleeve movement is particularly good. The hem and wrist drawcords are very good at locking wind out. There are two massive pockets on the chest that are ideal for maps. A third small external pocket accommodates a compass or GPS receiver.

Most importantly you also get a hood - a feature that is welcome when the wind rises or a light shower blows in, as you can easily put this up rather than reaching for a hat or your hooded waterproof. Better still the fit of the hood is stunning and it moves with your head perfectly. I also like the fact you can roll the hood down to the collar, so that it doesn`t flap when not needed.

For most hill and mountain walkers, the Patagonia Ready Mix will be a useful addition to the kit they take out and is ideal for all conditions except for prolonged periods in the rain.

BUY IT IF: You want a lightweight windproof and water-resistant soft shell that is ideal when you`re not wearing a waterproof, particularly for hill walking and backpacking in the UK.
