SCARPA New SL

The Scarpa SL is a modern day classic, tried and trusted by thousands of walkers. It?s bombproof qualities ensure that it has lasted for many years, despite being beaten and battered over mountains. In winter crampons can be strapped to the stiff Vibram sole, while in summer the one-piece leather upper is water resistant enough to remove the need for a waterproof lining, while retaining more breathability. In short, the Scarpa SL is a perfect boot for year round mountain walking.

Against the standard SLs the weight is noticeably less, from 2060g to 1788g. The weight of a less supportive boot. What sets the new SL from the classic is the extra ankle flex, making the boot feel more like a stiff platform to stand on rather than a stiff boot that locks your ankle into position. The stiff Vibram sole unit shows it?s worth in a boot that is designed for tackling the roughest mountain slopes. The stiffness takes the aches and pains out of every step whilst traveling over tough terrain such as scree and loose rock.

The sole unit and flex of the forefoot is just a stiff and reliable as ever. The stiff sole allows the use of small ledges whilst scrambling and the stiff upper allows foot jamming in cracks. In snow the soles are practical for kicking steps and the aggressive lugs dig deep to hold a positive grip.

Scrapa have improved the SL in the only way it could have been. But in introducing more ankle flew they?ve altered its character. Easier to like from the first step it undoubtedly is. It?s still superbly built and hugely capable. More people will love and buy the new SL. But will they love it as much and as long as owners of the old?
